Apply to Become an ERO

To become an ERO, you will need to fill out Form 8633 and return it to the IRS. You can find this form available for download at http://www.irs.gov. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer to download IRS Form 8633.

Once you click the link to the IRS website, click the Tax Professionals tab to find the form. Alternatively, you can use the upper right corner search box on their home page to find it. Simply type in “Form 8633” and then click enter.

You will require a unique fingerprint card issued by the IRS. To get the fingerprint card, call the IRS at 1-866-255-0654. Forms 8633 can be sent to the Andover Service Center. You can find their day and overnight mailing address on page 4 of Form 8633.

Important Notice

If you are an Electronic Return Originators (ERO) and you are expanding your e-filing business to include new physical locations, you will need to submit Forms 8633 for those locations. Physical locations are locations owned or leased by the ERO. Fingerprint cards are required for the company’s principals, as well as the responsible officials mentioned on the application. Fingerprint cards are not required if they have been submitted with an application that has already been accepted into the IRS e-filing program.

According to the IRS procedure, professional status evidence may be replaced with fingerprint cards if the tax office’s principal or responsible official is an attorney, a CPA, a bonded banking official or one that has been fingerprinted less than 2 years ago, an enrolled agent or a publicly owned corporation.

IRS Requirements for Tax Professionals

Tax professionals must register as an Electronic Return Originator (ERO) with the Internal Revenue Service requires if they want to file tax returns electronically. Once the IRS accepts an ERO’s registration, they assignan Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) to the tax professional. Form 8633 (Application to Participate in the IRS e-file Program) must be obtained, filled out and submitted for registration as an ERO.The IRS also requires that form 8633 be submitted together with a fingerprint card in the official format issued by the IRS. They do not accept different formats and reject applications that do not follow these guidelines.
